A police helicopter hovered over the 2300 block of Loma Vista Place in Silver Lake on Tuesday afternoon after a? resident reportedly came across three men in her home. But it turned out these guys were on the prowl for real estate,? not laptops, according to the LAPD Northeast Division Twitter feed:

It?s not clear who the agents were working for or what home they were touring. There are no homes for sale in the 2300 block of? Loma Vista Place, where properties are reachable only via a public? stairway.? Meanwhile, real estate agents with nearby listings said none of their clients had reported coming across an unannounced trio of wandering real estate agents.? The watch commander at the LAPD?s Northeast Division? said this morning that all he knew about the incident was that no crime had been committed.
Perhaps some agents got the wrong address and day for the broker caravan?

But really, Ms. Palin and The Donald have too much baggage and Gov. Daniels ? a decent man and an effective governor ? is too ? well, think Paul Ryan without the pizzazz.
In any case, the official convention speaking schedule for the night includes a slot for ?to be announced? just before Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida introduces Romney.
Although his political image isn?t as hard-edged as the late Charlton Heston's of ?cold, dead hands? pro-gun fame, Eastwood endorsed John McCain in 2008 and has done the same for Romney this year. He?s described President Obama as ?a greenhorn? who ?didn?t have experience in decision-making."
When Republicans speak of ?Dirty Harry,? they usually mean Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) of Nevada ? the guy who charged that Romney hadn?t paid any taxes for the past decade.
But tonight at least, the reference seems likely to be to the ?make my day? guy himself.

Computer viruses are constantly replicating throughout computer networks and wreaking havoc. But what if they had to find mates in order to reproduce?
In the current issue of Evolution, Michigan State University researchers created the digital equivalent of spring break to see how mate attraction played out through computer programs, said Chris Chandler, MSU postdoctoral researcher at MSU's BEACON Center for the Study of Evolution in Action.
"This is actually a big question that still generates a lot of debate," said Chandler, who co-authored the study with Ian Dworkin, assistant professor of zoology, and Charles Ofria, associate professor of computer science and engineering. "People have some good ideas, but they can be hard to test really well in nature, so we decided to take a different approach."
The novel approach involved creating promiscuous programs in a virtual world called Avida, a software environment in which specialized computer programs compete and reproduce. Because mutations happen when Avidians copy themselves, which lead to differences in reproductive rates, these digital organisms evolve, just like living things, added Ofria, who created Avida.
The researchers programed the Avidians with the ability to grow sexual displays ? e-peacock tails of sorts. They also allowed them to choose mates randomly. As the researchers predicted, they usually went for the showiest mates. But why?
"One school of thought argues that the main benefit of choosing an attractive partner is that your offspring also will be sexy," said Dworkin. "In the other camp are those who argue that these sexual ornaments are a sign of good health, and so choosing a showy mate ensures that you'll get good genes to pass on to your offspring."
Traditionally, biologists thought that ornamental displays clue in potential mates about an individual's virility because the structures are costly, biologically speaking; only an animal in really good health could bear the burden they impose. So the researchers altered Avidians' genetic code to allow them to grow exaggerated displays practically for free.
They expected this change to diminish the evolutionary benefits of preferring showy mates, since even the wimpiest of Avidians could now grow enormous digital tail feathers.
"I was surprised when we didn't find that at all," Chandler said. "Even when we eliminated the costs of these displays, they still evolved to be an indicator of a male's genetic quality."

Have you ever thought about opening your Snoqualmie Valley home to a foster child?? If so, tonight, from 5PM ? 8PM, at Encompass main branch in North Bend, is your chance to start that process. Washington State Foster Home Licensor, Kim Johnson, will offer the first step to becoming a foster family, Foster Care Orientation.
What started out as the personal desire of Snoqualmie Ridge residents, Leilani and Smokey McClure, to adopt a little 4-year-old boy, turned into a passion to inspire others to care for at-risk children in Washington state; children in need of short-term, sometimes long-term or adoptive homes.
Leilani and her husband learned of a 4-year-old boy who, although was living with a great-aunt, was a foster child in need of a long-term home ? a ?forever family.? His birth parents had their parental rights terminated and this great-aunt did not want to adopt him. Leilani said they found that it wasn?t as easy as just wanting to adopt a child from the state system.? They first had to be foster licensed. Initially appearing to be a daunting process, she and her husband were motivated to tackle it.
Leilani explains, ?We knew that we could provide this child with the unconditional love he needed and that we had a place that he could call home; his 6th and last home. Two years later, we not only adopted him, but have provided a temporary save home for four other foster children.?
There are nearly 10,000 children in foster care in Washington State, with only 1/3 of them being cared for by relatives. That leaves over 6,000 foster children in homes of unrelated caregivers. More than 1/3 of them have been in foster care for longer than two years. One is six foster kids will live in three or more homes during the first year and over 400 children ?age out? of foster care (turn 18 without being adopted or being reunited with their birth families) each year.
This is the type of data Leilani discovered during the foster-licensing process; data that inspired her to encourage others to open their homes and hearts to these children.
There are nowhere near enough families to provide loving, caring homes for these children who come from a world of neglect and abuse.? Leilani describes the Snoqualmie Valley as a perfect and wonderful place to welcome these kids.? She adds, ?We tend to take for granted the safe, family focused neighborhoods that we live in here in the valley ? a world completely foreign to some of the children in state foster care. Why not share this with them? If even for a short time or forever??
Leilani has also reached out to the valley?s child-focused businesses to bring awareness about area foster kids.? Snoqualmie?s DMW Martial Arts is an example of a local business who welcomed and provided support for foster kids looking to participate in fun sports ? just like any other kid.
The McClure?s own child, Isaiah, is now enjoying and active in his Snoqualmie Valley life.? He?s a competitive member of the Snoqualmie Valley Wrestling Club and attends Summit Classical Christian School in Fall City.? He?s also been an amazing foster-brother to the four other foster kids that have shared his home.
To become foster licensed home, those interested must first attend Orientation, a 3-hour informative meeting taught by a Washington State Department of Licensing Foster Home Licensor, where the licensing process and requirements are presented.? Attendees leave with a full licensing packet, including application and forms necessary to complete the process.
It?s been Leilani?s desire to bring all the training necessary to become a foster parent out to the Snoqualmie Valley, making it easier for those interested to become licensed. ?Her desire is turning into reality this evening.

British cyclist Philip Hindes, who won gold at the London Olympics, has had his bike stolen during a burglary at his home, police said Wednesday.
Hindes, who topped the winner's podium in the men's team sprint at London 2012 alongside Jason Kenny and Chris Hoy, had used the red, white and blue Pinarello Paris bicycle for training.
Police said it was not the bike which the 20-year-old rode when he won his Olympic medal.
The bike was was taken along with Hindes' blue Volkswagen Golf in a raid on his home near Manchester, north-west England, at some point between August 23 and August 26.
Thieves smashed through patio doors and ransacked the house, which was unoccupied at the time of the burglary, while Hindes' car was later found burnt out by police.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) ? A new report by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy examines the risk factors for injuries to U.S. military personnel from crashes involving highly mobile multipurpose wheeled vehicles (HMMWVs), more commonly known as Humvees. According to the study, involvement in combat and serving as the vehicle's operator or gunner posed the greatest risk for injury. It is the first published analysis of factors associated with Humvee injury risk in a deployed setting, and is in the August issue of the journal Military Medicine.
According to the U.S. Department of Army, motor vehicle crashes -- both privately owned and military vehicles -- account for nearly one-third of all U.S. military fatalities annually and are among the top five causes of hospitalization for personnel.
"Nearly half of all those involved in motor vehicle crashes in Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan from 2002-2006 were in Humvees at the time of the crash," said principal investigator Keshia Pollack, PhD, an associate professor with the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. "It's critical that we consider risk factors for these crashes, and use this knowledge to develop injury prevention programs and policies," she said. For example, given the association between being in a combat setting (versus crashes that do not occur during combat situations and injury), training for the military in combat-like situations through simulation or live-training exercises for all drivers could be important. Similarly, as gunners are often in an exposed position on top of the vehicle, equipment or devices that protect them from injury in rollover crashes should be explored.
The authors, who included researchers from the U.S. Army as well as the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, used data on U.S. Army vehicle crashes from 1999 to 2006 collected by the Army Safety Management Information System. The total documented cases of crashes was narrowed to focus on the sub-population of active duty U.S. Army, Army Reserve, and National Guard soldiers involved in military vehicle crashes in the countries of Iraq, Kuwait, and Afghanistan, occurring during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.
"The finding that the odds of being injured when the crash occurred in combat indicates that in a high-stress situation, the soldier may be distracted or less likely to take self-protective measures or follow safety regulations," said study co-author Susan P. Baker, MPH, a professor with the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy. "As motor vehicle crashes are responsible for one-third of all U.S. military deaths annually, it's imperative that significant measures be taken to save lives."
The research was funded by grants from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy, and the Defense Safety Oversight Council through Concurrent Technologies Corporation. Dr. (CPT) Samuel Peik, an army physician who completed his MPH with the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy in 2010, is first author on the paper, "Injuries to Deployed U.S. Army Soldiers Involved in HMMWV Crashes, 2002-2006." KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - Weekend storms produced heavy rain in some parts of the drought-stricken central United States but gave other areas scant relief from the worst drought since 1956 and the widespread damage it has done to crops across the Midwest.
Central Kansas received the most rain on Saturday and Sunday, three to four inches in many areas and six inches in some spots, according to the National Weather Service. Topeka and Wichita, after months of extreme drought, broke rainfall records for any August 25 with close to three inches in each city.
In Missouri, rainfall totals ranged from a 1/2-inch to two inches in the hard-hit western and southwestern counties.
"It's a good enough rain to help crops, or what's left of them - such as soybeans - but it will not fill any reservoirs," said weather service meteorologist Jay Colucci in Springfield, Missouri.
Most of northern Arkansas, where exceptional drought has dried up streams in the Ozark Mountains, received only traces to less than a half inch of rain Saturday and Sunday, said weather service meteorologist Brian Smith in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Oklahoma fared better, getting two or three inches in some areas, said weather service forecaster Daryl Williams in Norman, Oklahoma.
"It's a start," Williams said. "But I always say that it takes several months to get into a drought and it will take several months of above average rainfall to get out of it. This rain is encouraging but certainly not a drought-buster."

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Until this week, Rep. Todd Akin was virtually unknown beyond his suburban district, associated more with his deep religious convictions than any legislative achievements.
Long before his comments about women's bodies and "legitimate rape" made him a potential flashpoint in the fall campaign, Akin was a favorite among home-schooling organizations and conservative church groups in the area where his relatives have lived for generations. He seldom authored bills or sought wider recognition.
Now Akin could help shape the national political debate in a Senate race that leaders of his own party figure he can't win, and they're worried he'll drag down other Republicans with him. But if Akin's 12 years in Congress have proven anything, it's that pressure from the party establishment carries little weight with him.
"He's never been popular among Republicans, and Todd Akin doesn't care," Saint Louis University political science professor Ken Warren said. "The best you can say for Todd is that he's a very principled guy. He believes what he believes, and he's not going to compromise those principles just to be in the mainstream."
The 65-year-old, six-term congressman ascended in Missouri politics largely on his own. He grew up on a farm outside St. Louis, earned an engineering degree and went to work at now-bankrupt Laclede Steel Co., which his great-grandfather started. He and his wife, Lulli, settled on land in St. Louis County owned by Akin's father. Each Independence Day he would dress in colonial attire as the family hosted a party for the neighborhood.
The Akins home-schooled their four sons (three of whom graduated from the Naval Academy and became Marine Corps officers) and two daughters. Lulli Akin's involvement in home-schooling groups helped create the base of support that has long sustained her husband's political career.
Akin, a member of the conservative Presbyterian Church in America, earned a master's of divinity degree from Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis in 1984. He never became a pastor but four years later won a seat in the Missouri House, where he established a track record as a staunch abortion opponent and supporter of gun rights.
Faith is never far from his mind. In a fundraising email sent to supporters Wednesday, Akin said he was accountable only to God and the voters, not "party bosses."
His anti-establishment streak started with his first run for Congress. In 2000, party elders favored Gene McNary, a former St. Louis County executive who served in the George H.W. Bush administration and ran previously for governor and senator.
Despite being an underdog, Akin defeated McNary by 56 votes on a day when drenching rain kept turnout at 17 percent.
Akin's disregard for the advice of party elites can be seen throughout his congressional tenure.
While debating Bush's Medicare prescription drug benefit in 2003, House leaders assiduously courted rank-and-file members to vote for the legislation. Akin refused, saying the program would blow up the federal budget and attract more illegal immigrants.
He also voted against Bush's No Child Left Behind education package. And in 2008, Akin waited months after Sen. John McCain had secured the Republican presidential nomination before endorsing him, citing concerns about McCain's views on embryonic-stem-cell research among other issues.
In Congress, Akin has been something of a backbencher. He authored the Protect the Pledge Act in 2006 that sought to ensure the phrase "under God" was maintained when reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The bill did not pass in the Senate.
But he is well known in Washington for his spirited pursuit of legislation on social issues, even in cases where it stands no chance of becoming law. Akin has sponsored or co-sponsored a raft of legislation affecting abortion, including a proposal that would ban all federal funding for abortions. He has also sought to require parental consent for minors who want birth control.
His efforts have won him the support of conservative groups such as the Family Research Council, which was one of few organizations to stand by him after the rape remarks.
Akin was always something of an outsider in the House Republican caucus. He has relatively few friends in the caucus and tends to eschew House social gatherings. Inside the Capitol, Akin is considered amiable, if removed. He is generally friendly and cordial with individual members, including Democrats.
An Army veteran with a son who served as a Marine in Iraq, Akin serves on the Armed Services Committee and is chairman of the Subcommittee on Seapower and Projection Forces. He lobbied for an appointment to the House budget committee and was appointed after Republicans retook the majority. He also serves on the Science and Technology Committee.
Akin, one of the first members of Congress to join the tea party caucus, has generated backlash before.
In June 2011, a group of St. Louis-area religious leaders condemned his comments that liberalism "really is a hatred for God." He drew fire again in recent weeks for comparing federal student loans to "a stage three cancer."
Some considered Akin an underdog again in a three-way primary race for the Senate, but he dominated in the most conservative areas of Missouri and handily defeated millionaire businessman John Brunner and former state Treasurer Sarah Steelman. Polls showed he had a good chance of unseating incumbent Democrat Claire McCaskill in November ? a race crucial to Republican efforts to retake the Senate.
Everything changed Sunday. In an interview with St. Louis TV station KTVI, Akin said he understood that conception from rape was rare.
"If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down," Akin said. He has since apologized many times over.
But fellow Republicans, including presumptive presidential nominee Mitt Romney, have turned on Akin, calling for him to get out of the race. In addition to concern that he has forfeited any chance of winning in Missouri, there was growing worry that the fallout could hurt other congressional candidates and even Romney.
Republicans trying to force him out face a formidable challenge.
Akin has proclaimed that his success comes from not paying attention to politics. His campaign isn't run by a political operative but by his eldest son, Perry.
His unwavering opposition to abortion, support for prayer in school and gun rights and disdain for big government have attracted a solid base of support in an increasingly conservative state.
"One thing that has drawn me to Todd is his faith," said Don Hinkle, director of public policy for the Missouri Baptist Convention.
State Rep. Dwight Scharnhorst, a St. Louis County Republican, said "of all the people in Washington, D.C., if I had to rate one person that I would trust holding my wallet or keeping my grandchildren over the weekend, Todd Akin would be at the top of the list."
Another Republican state representative, Bill White of Joplin, described Akin as different from many elected officials who change their stance on issues based on the whims of voters or pressure from political elites.
"Money, power, position," White said. "My assessment is those things are not going to register with him."

Everyone agrees that good communications is good for the doctor-patient relationship which is good for better compliance and outcomes. Listen to your doctor and do what she says is all there is to it.
But how well good is the doctor-patient relationship once you get past the basic communications skills?
If you asked the average physician how good his communication skills are, he would probably rank himself as good to excellent ? perhaps ranking himself/herself in the top 20% of physicians.
But that is impossible.

Israeli psychologist and neuroscientist Tali Sharot researches ?optimism bias.?
She claims that 80% of us experience it. ?It? being the tendency to overestimate the likelihood of good things happening to us. As she puts it: ?we?re more optimistic than realistic, and we?re oblivious about it.? An example: Divorce rates in the western world weigh in at about 40%. Yet when you ask newlyweds to rate their own likelihood of divorce, they more than likely put the figure at, yes, 0%.

So ? it doesn?t really matter if you and your physician are not really in the top percentile of great communications in the doctor-patient relationship. It?s enough for the two of you to be biased in the right direction and ?. that is a good thing.
