Google, Facebook Spent Record Amounts On D.C. Lobbying In Q1 2012

FacebookMore dollars were poured into the Beltway from technology companies in the first quarter of 2012. As shown through previous lobbying spends, each quarter, Facebook and Google continue to spend more and more on lobbying efforts in Washington D.C. In the most recent disclosure reports filed in the U.S. Senate?s lobbying database, both of the companies hit all time highs in terms of lobbying dollars. Google?s lobbying spend hit an all-time high again this quarter, with spending coming in at a whopping $5.03 million, tripling its spend from the same period a year ago. Last quarter, Google spent $3.76 million on lawmakers. Microsoft only spent $1.8 million on lobbying for the quarter. In 2011, Google spent $9.7 million on lobbying, and has already surpassed half of that spend in this past quarter alone.

Ask Engadget: best sub-$150 mechanical keyboard?

Image

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is coming to us from Andrew, who wants to get a proper keyboard, for doing serious business on. If you're looking to send in an inquiry of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"Hi, I'm thinking about getting a mechanical keyboard for my desktop. I'm a student so I'll need to do a bunch of word-processing and also moderate FPS gaming in the downtime. I've got a budget of $150 and prefer Cherry MX Blue and Brown switches, do you have any suggestions?"

No "thank you?" Man, the kids of today. Anyway, it's a weird coincidence because we've also been pondering swapping out our chiclet daily-driver for something more serious. We played with Matias' One at CES, while Andrew himself has one eye on the Razer Blackwidow or the Das Model S Pro / Stealth. But that's us, what we want to know is what y'all out there are using when it comes to properly made keyboards -- stick your comments below and let's get this doing done.

Egypt?s shaky finances: Can the IMF and government agree on a loan deal?

The IMF wants assurances that the political leaders who emerge to run Egypt after elections next month will be on board with the financial requirements underpinning a proposed $3.2 billion loan.

The International Monetary Fund is moving closer to approving a multibillion-dollar loan to help Egypt shore up its shaky finances, but the failure of some emerging political players in the Arab Spring country to endorse the plan is holding up a final agreement.

Egyptians vote next month in the first presidential election since the fall of Hosni Mubarak last year. And the IMF wants assurances that the political leaders who emerge to run the country will be on board with the financial requirements underpinning a proposed $3.2 billion loan.

On the other hand, some Egyptians and international financial experts are asking if it is even appropriate for a lame-duck military government to complete a deal that ties the hands of a future government.

The issue of Egypt and, more broadly, the Arab Spring countries, will be a chief concern of the spring meetings of the IMF and World Bank this weekend in Washington. The question is: How does the global financial community follow through on its commitment to help them on the road of reform?

In December, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said her institution had set aside $35 billion for loans to help shore up the Arab countries in transition. But since then, concerns about commitments to reform and questions about leaders? ability to hold up their end of a deal have held up agreements.

As Ms. Lagarde said at a Washington press conference Thursday, the IMF ?stands ready [and] will help each of those [Arab Spring] countries,? but she said the countries would also have to adhere to the IMF?s rules to get the loans.

?With IMF programs, it takes two to tango, right?? she said.

In the case of Egypt, the wise thing might seem to be to wait for the new government to emerge, given the doubts about future support for a loan. But the problem is that Egypt?s finances and economy are deteriorating now, and fast: The country?s foreign reserves have shrunk by more than half, tourism has plummeted, unemployment has jumped ? and as a result, Egypt needs an infusion of as much as $12 billion from public and private sources to stabilize its finances, experts say.

The IMF has two basic conditions for extending loans Lagarde says: First, the IMF must have negotiated with authorities an economic plan that will ?actually help that country pull itself out of the difficulty it is in?; and second, there must be ?broad political support in the country? for the loan program.

Until recently, the Muslim Brotherhood?s Freedom and Justice Party, which emerged as a dominant political force in parliamentary elections several months ago, opposed any IMF package, but party leaders appear to have switched to favoring the loan. That endorsement has helped fuel renewed optimism among IMF officials that a loan the organization had hoped to agree on with Egypt in March can still be concluded this month.

On Friday, Masood Ahmed, IMF Middle East director, said prospects for a deal with Egypt were brightening. ?We feel there is some progress in terms of getting a commitment and broad buy-in to the objectives and the measures? of a loan program, he said.

Concluding a loan with Egypt would be a good signal to the region, he added, which he said continues to experience a slowdown in economic growth as a result of the repercussions of political upheaval and the effects of Europe?s debt crisis.

Importance Of Ecommerce Website Design For Successful Online ...

In this era, when internet have entered in almost all the realms of our lives, business has also been strongly affected by it and that is how the concept of online business or e commerce have emerged.

Author: Hari Krishna
?Presentation sells? and that?s why strong emphasis has always being laid on the design of the website intended for e commerce.

What is e commerce? Any business which is carried online is e commerce and the websites which execute this online business becomes e commerce website. So all the business is to be carried out from this website and so the prime importance is to be given on its appearance and the features which are to be highlighted and which can represent the work to be done. The way website is being designed should be able to reflect the main agendas and motives of the company. A design should be in such that maximum information could reach out to the clients and at the same time, no compromise is to be made with the quality of it.

The Importance of eCommerce Web design can be summarized as follows:

1. It is not domain specific and with an apt design, the trader can reach people all over the world.

2. It can be expanded as per the needs. In case the trader intends to increase the number of products to be sold, he can add newer items into the catalogue and can provide the required information under categories and sub categories which provide the customer an ease of looking out for the desired product.

3. It is one of the most important ways of increasing the revenue of the trader. A lucrative design is capable of attracting more and more traffic towards the website and as the number of people who visit the website increases; there is increase in the revenue to be generated.

4. The websites prevents the customers to wander in different stores for buying various products. All they require is to visit the website and check the catalogue to select the product they intend to buy. That ways they get the desired information about the product with convenience. So an efficient ecommerce web design should be in such a way that the customer can reach to the respective piece of information easily and so it should be simple yet presentable.

5. Brand awareness can also be increased with the web designing. As the website can reach people globally, it enhances the awareness about the brand and thus further helps in its sale.

People from the related sectors also visit the website and thus interaction amongst various trading firms gets enhanced. In case you are doing research for a specific product, you tend to take a look at the related products as well and thus come across new products.

These are some of the advantages which make an ecommerce web design very important and so it becomes necessary to choose right company which is competent enough to produce an efficient web design in budget affordability. The web design is the first thing which a customer would look at and since the first impression is the last impression, web designs become an area of importance in case you wish to have run a successful online business.

Fusion-io SDK gives developers native memory access, keys to the NAND realm

Fusion-io SDK gives developers native memory access, keys to the NAND realm

Thought your SATA SSD chugged along real nice? Think again. Fusion-io has just released an SDK that will allow developers to bypass all the speed draining bottlenecks that rob NAND memory of its true potential (i.e. the kernel block I/O layer,) and tap directly into the memory itself. In fact, Fusion-io is so confident of its products abilities, it prefers to call them ioMemory Application Accelerators, rather than SSDs. The SDK allows developers native access to the ioMemory, meaning applications can benefit from the kind of hardware integration you might get from a proprietary platform. The principle has already been demonstrated earlier this year, when Fusion-io delivered one billion IOPS using this native access. The libraries and APIs are available now to registered members of its developer program, hit the more coverage link to sign up.

Eye Exercises To Improve Vision ? Do They Really Work?

One of the first things people ask when they hear about eye exercises to improve vision is whether they really work or not to give you better eyesight. The truth is yes, they do work, and they work quite well actually. When given that answer, people then usually ask, ?Well if eye exercises work so well to improve vision, then why isn?t everyone doing them?? People are skeptical by nature, and that is understandable, but there is a reason that you don?t hear much about natural vision improvement, and I?m going to share that with you today in this article.

Think about this. The eye care industry is a multi-billion dollar industry world wide. Every year, eye doctors, glasses and contact lens manufacturers, laser eye surgeons, etc. make literally billions of dollars in profit. However, that industry would not make any money if everyone was performing some sort of vision improvement routine and had healthy vision. Therefore, the eye care industry is doing everything they can to make sure that people either don?t find out about natural eye exercises to improve vision, or make people believe that natural vision improvement just doesn?t work. It makes total sense. If everybody started doing eye exercises to improve vision, then nobody would purchase glasses, contacts, contact lens solution, laser eye surgery, etc., and the eye care industry would not make their billions of dollars. Plain and simple (and totally unfair).

The government has a tendency to suppress information like that to keep them from losing any profit. However, it is unfair for them to keep such useful and beneficial information from people like you and me. That is one of the main reasons I created this article. I think everybody needs to know about eye exercises to improve vision so they can have healthier eyesight and not have to worry about buying glasses and contacts for the rest of their lives.

Packaging, Photography, and Presentation - Childhood Obesity News

Stevan - Cereal Knowledge

Childhood Obesity News has been exploring the art and science of food porn (or foodporn), including the ways in which food is visually enhanced, sometimes for the purpose of advertising, and sometimes just because. An entire enormous genre of photography is focused on the depiction of food.

Photoshop and its brethren may have made the real profession of food photography into a lost art. Back in the day, the artistes would fiddle around for hours, adjusting the lights and coating the food with glycerine. They got up to all kinds of tricks to achieve a tactile, tasty look.

Who needs that kind of craftsmanship, when we have computers? An online mentor known as ?Heather? offers ?7 Tips for Aspiring Food Pornographers?:

Try both portrait and landscape mode when shooting. It can create a different feel to the finished photo. If you are wanting to submit to one of the foodporn sites, you will need to crop the photo to a square format so it?s a good idea to keep this in mind from the beginning. Above all, remember that food pornography is best shared. Don?t just sit there drooling over the computer screen, bake those cookies and enjoy them with someone special!

Is all this a bit sick? Or is it normal and healthy? Is food porn nothing more than a modern extension of such venerable traditions as the pickle contest at the state fair? And what about those foodporn sites? It seems there are several of them, and pictures of food is what they are full of ? tens of thousands of pictures of food. No disrespect to farmers, restaurants, or Moms, but is the obsession with food indicative of some all-pervasive societal pathology?

Australia never ceases to astonish. Some government agency did the research to find out the most visually repulsive color, which happens to be olive green. Why did they want to know? Because (unless it is successfully challenged by whatever process the country uses for reversing unpopular legislation) a law will take effect soon, requiring all brands of cigarettes to be sold in olive-green packages. They must also look identical in every other way, with only two lines of text ? to identify the brand, and prominent health warnings.

Come December, the playing field will be level, packaging-wise. Kayla Holman explains:

The plain packaging initiative has one goal, to lower the number of tobacco-related deaths throughout the country. Apparently the Australian government believes that this can be done by grossing people out. Or in more proper terms; they aim to use unattractive packaging to dissuade people (particularly youngsters) from turning to cigarettes as a form of personal or stylistic expression? Plain packaging is making large enough waves in Australia that the aftershock could impact decisions made in Canada and the U.K. as well.

Chris Snowdon of the Adam Smith Institute contributed to the debate, because he doesn?t want this crazy idea spreading to the U.K. He fears for the future of not only the tobacco industry, but sugar, fat, alcohol, and salt as well:

What happens to tobacco tends to happen to other products sooner or later. Public health organisations around the world have been applying the blueprint of antitobacco regulation to other products for years. Sin taxes and advertising bans are increasingly common for certain types of food and drink?

Well, yes, that is exactly what Dr. Pretlow and many others in the United States would like to see happen! If the restrictions on advertising junk food were the same as the ones that apply to tobacco, that would be a big step in the right direction. Extra taxation isn?t a bad idea either, especially if the revenues go to obesity prevention and treatment. Dr. Pretlow says:

Foods that kids say they have the most problem resisting should be taxed, in the same manner that taxation of tobacco products has shown success in decreasing tobacco use.

As soon as the plain cigarette-packaging law was passed, Australian nutrition activists got into the act, talking about generic packaging for junk food. Some radicals have even suggested that high-nutrition foods be packaged in glitzy wrappers, in order to attract the eyes of indigenous people in the outback, whose food choices are said to be easily swayed by a colorful and shiny external appearance. The same is definitely true of children. It may be worth trying.

Your responses and feedback are welcome!

Chris Pine Leaves Action For Drama In 'People Like Us'

'I was interested in doing a film that was smaller scope than the films I had done previously,' actor tells MTV News.
By Kevin P. Sullivan

Chris Pine and first-time director Alex Kurtzman have a few things in common. Both made names for themselves with large action movies like J.J. Abrams' "Star Trek" and "Transformers" (Kurtzman as a writer and producer), and the upcoming film "People Like Us" marks a distinct change for both men.

"People Like Us" is the story of a young man who falls on hard financial times just as he learns that his recently deceased father has left a small fortune to a sister he doesn't know.

MTV News spoke with Pine about the change of pace for him and what it was like working with co-star Elizabeth Banks.

MTV News: What was it that attracted you to the script originally?

Chris Pine: What attracted me to the film was just the quality of the writing. I was really interested in doing a film that was smaller scope than the films that I had done previously in the past couple years. This one was an intimate family drama, and I thought even the anomalous experience of someone finding out that their father had a completely separate family, everybody's got family dramas of their own. Certainly, though I can't relate to that specific experience, I can relate to having stuff in the family. This one takes place in the moment where all the stuff that's been brewing for years and years and years finally comes to a head and has to be dealt with.

MTV: How does making the film's central relationship a brother-sister one affect the overall movie?

Pine: Clearly it's going to progress in a way that can't be a love story between a sister and brother. It is in a sense that these two people get to know one another and find that they love one another because they're the only two people that can relate and understand the experience of living in that family with that father and that mother. And because they've been so traumatized by the lies that their family has told for so many years, they find solace in one another's mutual understanding. I think it's refreshing because I don't think people have seen something like this specific story in cinema before, at least in the States. There's a quality of the film that kind of reminded me of one of my favorite films, "Kramer vs. Kramer," and it kind of has the depth of something like "Ordinary People" and the humor of a comedy. It's just — for the lack of a better term — very human.

MTV: Did it strike you as interesting that the film lacks the central romance that drives most dramas?

Pine: Not really because there are many stories in your own life that you lead that have nothing to do with a romantic other, whether it be work or dealing with your family. Oftentimes, many of the most pivotal stories that we play out in our own life don't have anything to do with a girlfriend or a lover or a husband or a wife. That didn't pose a problem for me because I thought that this was a story more about a man really becoming an authentic adult and learning how to deal honestly with those people in his life, his father and his mother and his girlfriend and his newfound sister.

MTV: With the relationship with Elizabeth Banks' character being so central, what was your relationship with her like on set?

Pine: It was a pretty intense filmmaking experience. We had a lot of fun on set, and I love Elizabeth to death. She's incredibly smart and doesn't suffer fools. I appreciated her work ethic and just shooting the sh-- on set. It was a film that demanded a lot of our attention and a lot of protecting our respective characters. I felt very protective of Sam. The piece, as it progresses forward, clearly because of the lies Sam tells along the way, there's a lot of resentment from Elizabeth's character. There were times when we would have these blowout discussions on set among Alex, myself and Elizabeth about what we felt the scene needed to be in the context of the arc of our characters.

MTV: Alex Kurtzman has said in the past how important this movie was to him. Was there a sense of that on the set?

Pine: From what Alex told me, this is a very important story that was very important for him to tell, and we both bonded over the fact that our careers had taken a particular path toward making larger films, while in our beginnings, we both thought we'd be making different kinds of films. It was nice to finally make one that we both really, really had a lot of investment in. Not that I don't have investment in the films I do now — I'm saying it was nice to do something that we always wanted to make. I think it is exciting that Alex gets to show his fans that he is capable of doing a different kind of film entirely.

It's Summer Movie Preview Week, and MTV News will be bringing you exclusive interviews, clips and photos for the most anticipated summer movies. Get ready to gorge on inside looks at "The Avengers," Robert Pattinson's "Bel Ami," Kristen Stewart's "Snow White," "The Amazing Spider-Man" and more!

RIM announces 'budget' BlackBerry 9220 for Indian socialites

There are a lot of Indian hands out there, hands in which there could also be a BlackBerry smartphone. A fact not lost on RIM it would appear, as it's set to released its "most affordable" Curve -- the 9220 -- over there. Naturally, the ubiquitous BBM service takes center stage, even having its own dedicated button. The new handset also comes fully laden with all the usual social networking goodies, and for the launch RIM's kindly throwing in a selection of apps from BlackBerry World worth 2500 rupees (about $50) if you get on board before June 30th. You might want to find a WiFi hotspot to download them though, as there's no 3G, but you can tune into Radio Mumbai via the FM receiver to take your mind off that omission. Camera-wise it's a fairly humble 2-megapixel affair, which combined with the memory card slot, should allow a stack of photos for sharing. Wondering exactly how affordable it is? Lay down 10,990 rupees (about $210,) and it's yours -- as of tomorrow that is.
