LONDON (AP) ? WikiLeaks said Monday it was publishing a massive trove of leaked emails from the U.S. intelligence analysis firm Stratfor, shedding light on the inner workings of the Texas-based think tank.
The online anti-secrecy group said it had more than 5 million Stratfor emails and it was putting them out in collaboration with two dozen international media organizations. So far, however, only a small selection of the Stratfor emails appear to have been published to WikiLeaks' website.
"What we have discovered is a company that is a private intelligence Enron," WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange told journalists at London's Frontline Club, a reference to the Texas energy giant whose spectacular bankruptcy turned it into a byword for corporate malfeasance.
Assange accused Stratfor of running a network of paid informants, monitoring activist groups on behalf of major multinationals and making investments based on its secret intelligence.
Stratfor rejected claims that there was anything improper in the way it handled its informants.
"Stratfor has worked to build good sources in many countries around the world, as any publisher of global geopolitical analysis would do," the company said. "We have done so in a straightforward manner and we are committed to meeting the highest standards of professional conduct."
The Stratfor statement suggested the company wouldn't be commenting on Assange's other allegations.
"Having had our property stolen, we will not be victimized twice by submitting to questioning about them," the statement said.
The Austin, Texas-based Stratfor is a subscription-based publisher providing political, economic and military analysis to help customers reduce risk.
How WikiLeaks got its hands on the company's emails remains unclear, but Stratfor's statement said the messages appeared to be the same ones stolen by hackers over the Christmas holidays. The breach, claimed by the Internet activist group Anonymous, ravaged the company's servers and led to the disclosure of thousands of credit card numbers, among other information.
Stratfor condemned the latest disclosure as "a deplorable, unfortunate ? and illegal ? breach of privacy."
The company also said its CEO, George Friedman, remained at the head of the company. An apparently bogus email circulating online had claimed that he had resigned.

North Korea threatens 'sacred war' against joint US-South Korean military drill
SEOUL: North Korea on Saturday threatened to stage a "sacred war" over US-South Korean annual joint military exercises next week, denouncing the drill as a "silent declaration of war".
The North's National Defence Commission (NDC) described the exercise as "unpardonable war hysteria" and said its army and people would "foil" the US and South Korean moves with "a sacred war of our own style".
The threat is the latest instance of Pyongyang taking a hostile tone towards Seoul since Kim Jong-Un, the youngest son of the late leader Kim Jong-Il, took over following the death of his father in December.
Last week the North vowed "merciless retaliatory strikes" if any shells landed in waters claimed by Pyongyang during a live-fire artillery exercise near the disputed Yellow Sea border.
But in the event it took no military action in response to the drill.
The United States and South Korea are to mount two major annual joint military exercises, one in the coming week and the other in March.
Key Resolve, a computerised command post exercise, drill will start on Monday and continue until March 9. Separately, the joint air, ground and naval field training exercise Foal Eagle will be held from March 1 to April 30.
"Key Resolve and Foal Eagle are unpardonable war hysteria kicked up by the hooligans to desecrate our mourning period and an unpardonable infringement upon our sovereignty and dignity," the NDC said in a statement.
Kim Jong-Il died of a heart attack on December 17.
"Our army and people will foil the moves of the group of traitors to the nation and warmongers at home and abroad for a new war with a sacred war of our own style," the NDC said, indicating it will stage a counter exercise.
"War manoeuvres... are, in essence, a silent declaration of a war. The declaration of the war is bound to be accompanied by a corresponding physical retaliation," it said.
"Now that a war has been declared against us, the army and people are firmly determined to counter it with a sacred war of our own style and protect the security of the nation and the peace of the country," the NDC said.

After revealing that she has Type 2 diabetes in January, Deen is ready to move on and promote her slightly less fatty cuisine. Just don't expect her to throw out that tub of butter completely.
"I am who I am. But what I will be doing is offering up lighter versions of my recipes," the Food Network star told The Associated Press at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival on Friday. "I will have a broader platform now, trying to do something for everybody. But you know, I'm Southern by roots. I was taught [to cook] by my grandmother and nothing I can do would change that."
Paula Deen: I have Type 2 diabetes
Deen stands by her on-air cooking style, but clarifies that she'll also include healthier recipes into the mix to appeal to more people. The cook has made some other changes in her personal life, including walking on a treadmill, quitting smoking and cutting out sweet tea.
Deen received backlash in January when she revealed she had known about her diabetes for three years prior but had continued to promote her butter- and fat-laden recipes. "It took me 20 years to come out and stand up and say, 'Hey, my name's Paula and I'm agoraphobic,'" she said. "I was so ashamed, so embarrassed. So to [reveal my diabetes] in two-and-a-half years, I thought it was pretty good."
She also received criticism for capitalizing on her diagnosis by becoming the paid spokesperson for Novo Nordisk's drug Victoza and online program, Diabetes in a New Light. Deen shrugged it off, however, and said, "It's the way of the world. It's the American way. But I am taking a portion of that compensation and giving it back to the [American] Diabetes Association."

As a Catholic woman, I applaud the Obama administration for its commitment to providing health care for all Americans while respecting the views of those who have religious objections to birth control. Last year, President Obama announced that birth control would be made available without co-payment in all new health insurance plans. Any of the 335,000 houses of worship that oppose birth control could opt out of providing such coverage. Because of the diverse workforce, religious universities and hospitals would be required to provide contraception.
After weeks of heavy lobbying from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Obama revisited the issue and created a provision which allows religious hospitals and universities to opt out of providing birth control. Standing firm on access, he said that insurance companies would be required to cover contraception for these employees.
By all measures, the Catholic bishops won their battle. Still, they are not happy because women who work for religious universities and hospitals ? many of whom are not Catholic ? have access to birth control through their insurance plan. Creating economic barriers between working women and contraception is not only bad public policy, it lacks the compassion I have come to expect from the church.
The Institute of Medicine recommends birth control as a preventive health care benefit because it prevents unintended pregnancies, improves women?s health and reduces abortion rates. Birth control pills also have medically necessary purposes beside pregnancy prevention. They are prescribed for endometriosis, anemia and polycystic ovary syndrome.
Not only does the medical community support the use of contraception, so do most Americans. In fact, 99 percent of all sexually active women in the United States ? including 98 percent of Catholic women ? have used a method of contraception at some point in their lives. Among Catholic women who are currently at risk for unintended pregnancy, 87 percent are currently using contraception.
The majority of Americans and Catholics support birth control as a benefit in health insurance plans. A Public Policy Poll released just last week shows that 57 percent of voters believe women employed by Catholic hospitals and universities should have the same rights to contraception coverage as other women. A poll by Public Religion Research Institute shows that 58 percent of Catholics believe employers should be required to provide their employees with health care plans that cover contraception. Women should have access to birth control regardless of where they are employed.
Twenty-eight states, including California, already have contraceptive equity laws that require insurance to cover birth control. Eight of those states have refusal provisions, and only one of those states has a refusal provision that extends to religious hospitals.
Because there is such broad support for birth control, the bishops are distracting attention from the issue of access to contraception, and creating specious First Amendment and religious liberties arguments. The courts have already ruled that virtually identical exclusions in state contraceptive equity laws do not violate the First Amendment nor do they substantially burden a religious belief or practice. A New York Court of Appeals explained that when a religious organization chooses to hire nonbelievers, it must, at least to some degree, be prepared to accept neutral regulations imposed to protect employees? beliefs. In reality, birth control opponents ignore the religious freedom of individual workers and their right to make their own health care decisions. The current provision does not require any religiously affiliated institution to provide birth control. This is about health insurance coverage, which is one step removed. No employer should be allowed to impose his personal beliefs on employees regarding birth control coverage or basic health care.

Robotic bees pop up in swarms from flat sheets

Swarms of tiny robotic bees may be soon springing to life from finely machined sheets of material in a newly designed manufacturing process that combines popup book simplicity with intricate high-tech origami.
The process brings precision control and speed to a previously painstaking process for fat fingered engineers and opens the door to mass production of all kinds of insect-sized robots and other tiny electromechanical devices.
The manufacturing technique stems from the Robobees project at Harvard University, where electrical engineers are developing swarms of miniature flying robots to do everything from pollinate crops to spy on enemies.
One of the challenges the engineers faced was the time-consuming task of creating a swarm one Monolithic Bee (Mobee) at a time.?The error-prone process involved gluing together intricate parts by hand while looking through a microscope.
"Until recently, the manual assembly process was the state of the art in this field," Pratheev Sreetharan, a graduate student working on the project, said in a news release.
He and his colleagues have overcome this with a layering and folding technique that takes human hands out of the actual assembly.
They start with 18 layers of carbon fiber, a plastic film called Kapton, titanium, brass, ceramic, and adhesive sheets that each have a unique laser-cut design. The layers are stacked and aligned using pins and laminated together.?
The design incorporates the Mobee layers into an assembly scaffold that uses a system of 137 hinges and folding joints to assemble the insect into a 3-D shape in a single, popup-book-like movement.?
Once up, the entire device is dipped in a liquid metal solder that selectively bonds to brass pads, locking the bee together and allowing its removal from the quarter coin-sized assembly scaffold. Once removed, connection to an external power source allows Mobee's wings to flap.?
While the technique removes humans and their fat fingers from the assembly process, nimble minds are still required to figure out how all the layers will fit together and fold.
The research team thinks their assembly technique is widely applicable to the fabrication of electromechanical devices with functional parts measured in micrometers and is hoping to commercialize it.?
The fabrication technique will be described in the March issue of the Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - When Paula Symons joined the U.S. workforce in 1972, typewriters in her office clacked nonstop, people answered the telephones and the hot new technology revolutionizing communication was the fax machine. Symons, fresh out of college, entered this brave new world thinking she'd do pretty much what her parents' generation did: Work for just one or two companies over about 45 years before bidding farewell to co-workers at a retirement party and heading off into her sunset years with a pension. Forty years into that run, the 60-year-old communications specialist for a Wisconsin-based insurance company has worked more than a half-dozen jobs. She's been laid off, downsized and seen the pension disappear with only a few thousand dollars accrued when it was frozen. So, five years from the age when people once retired, she laughs when she describes her future plans. "I'll probably just work until I drop," she says, a sentiment expressed, with varying degrees of humor, by numerous members of her age group. Like 78 million other U.S. Baby Boomers, Symons and her husband had the misfortune of approaching retirement age at a time when stock market crashes diminished their 401 (k) nest eggs, companies began eliminating defined benefit pensions in record numbers and previously unimagined technical advances all but eliminated entire job descriptions from travel agent to telephone operator. At the same time, companies began moving other jobs overseas, to be filled by people willing to work for far less and still able to connect to the U.S. market in real time. "The paradigm has truly shifted. Now when you're looking for a job you're competing in a world where the competition isn't just the guy down the street, but the guy sitting in a cafe in Hong Kong or Mumbai," says Bill Vick, a Dallas-based executive recruiter who started BoomersNextStep.com in an effort to help Baby Boomers who want to stay in the workforce. Not only has the paradigm shifted, but as it has the generation whose mantra used to be, "Don't trust anyone over 30," finds itself now being looked on with distrust by younger Generation X managers who question whether boomers have the high-tech skills or even the stamina to do what needs to be done. "I always have the feeling that I have to prove my value all the time. That I'm not some old relic who doesn't understand social media or can't learn some new technique," says Symons, who is active on Twitter, Facebook, loves every new time-saving software app that comes down the pike and laughs at the idea of ever sending another fax. "Ahh, that's just so archaic," she says. Meanwhile, as companies have downsized, boomers have been hurt to some degree by their own sheer numbers, says Ed Lawler of the University of Southern California's Marshall School of Business. The oldest ones, Lawler says, aren't retiring, and more and more the youngest members of the generation ahead of them aren't either. It's no longer uncommon, he says, for people to work until 70. "People who would have normally been out of the workforce are still there, taking jobs that would have gone to what we now call the unemployed," he said. John Stewart of Springfield, Mo., sees himself becoming part of that new generation that never stops working. "No, I don't see myself retiring," says Stewart, who is media director for a large church. "I think I would be bored if I just all of a sudden quit everything and did whatever it is retired people do." Then there are the financial considerations. Like many boomers, the 60-year-old acknowledges he didn't put enough aside when he was younger. For more than 30 years, Stewart ran his own photography business, doing everything from studio portraits to illustrating annual reports for hospitals and other large corporations to freelancing for national magazines and newspapers. As the news media began to struggle, the magazine and newspaper work dried up. As the economy tanked, his large corporate clients began to use cheaper stock photos purchased online rather than hire him to take new ones. Eventually he took his current job, producing videos of pastors' sermons and photos for church publications. He says he is glad to be one boomer to make a late career change and keep working. "There were times when the money was really rolling in," he says of his old business. "But somehow retirement wasn't really in the forefront of my thinking then, so saving for it wasn't an automatic thing." Steve Wyard of Los Angeles says he and his wife have planned carefully for retirement. He's worked for 30 years for a company that sells and services commercial washers and dryers, and she's been with a health maintenance organization for even longer. They've invested cautiously, lived in the same house for decades and meticulously paid down the mortgage. Plus he's one of the few boomers who figures that, no matter what technology comes along, his job won't go away. "Everyone has to do the laundry," he says. Still, he and his wife have two sons, 19 and 21, to put through college, and Wyard, 61, sees that pushing back retirement for several years. Until then he plans to keep working, which is what every physically able boomer should consider doing, says USC's Lawler. Union membership, which has been declining for years, now includes only about 10 percent of all eligible U.S. employees, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Meanwhile, the number of defined benefit retirement funds offered by private enterprise have fallen from about one in three employers in 1990 to about one in five in 2005. With unions no longer in a strong position to fight for benefits like pensions, with jobs disappearing or going overseas, and with Gen. Xers and even younger Millennial Generation members coveting their jobs, Lawler warns this is no time for boomers to quit and allow the skills they've spent a lifetime building to atrophy.
